VHB is conducting a feasibility study to assess 20 sites within the Mattawamkeag, Piscataquis, and Lower Penobscot River watersheds on behalf of the Atlantic Salmon Federation. These sites, encompassing nine lake outlets, six dams, and three railroad crossings, potentially obstruct sea-run fish passages crucial for six diadromous species: alewife, blueback herring, Atlantic salmon, American eel, sea lamprey, and American shad. Collectively, these barriers impede access to more than 9,600 acres of spawning habitat. Through this reconnaissance, VHB is identifying priority opportunities to improve aquatic connectivity and restore critical migratory pathways, supporting long-term ecosystem health and resilient fisheries in Maine.
