As ridership between New Jersey to New York Penn Station continues to grow, extensive, long-term planning is essential. With major capital improvements and ongoing infrastructure investments shaping service over the next decade, NJ TRANSIT is proactively evaluating how to accommodate growing demand while maintaining reliable operations.
The Morris & Essex Line is the second-busiest line in the NJ TRANSIT Commuter Rail Network, and plays a critical role in regional mobility, connecting of daily riders to New York City and key destinations across Northern New Jersey. VHB led a study to develop implementable, customer-focused solutions to increase the line’s capacity, strengthen resilience, and improve service accessibility—particularly to the Hoboken Terminal—to accommodate anticipated Trans-Hudson ridership growth.
The impact of this forward-looking study is already evident, as four projects recommended by VHB have been incorporated into NJ TRANSIT’s Capital Plan to advance targeted investments that support long-term system performance and rider experience.
