To improve speed and reliability, allow for an increase in train frequency, and shorten travel times, VHB helped to make signal system upgrades for the Red and Orange Lines of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) subway system. The VHB Team designed revised signal block layouts and control lines that incorporate new intermediate speed commands. The work included detailed safe braking and capacity calculations, and Rail Traffic Controller (RTC) simulation modeling to validate the new control lines and improve mobility along these critical transit lines.
