The PVD Labs at 150 Richmond signify a pivotal advancement in Rhode Island’s rapidly growing life sciences sector, bringing together academia, biotech innovators, and public health experts in a pioneering environment. Situated strategically in Providence’s I-195 Redevelopment District, this facility is the result of a dynamic public-private partnership between the Rhode Island State Health Lab (RISHL) and Ancora Investments.
VHB is delivering survey, civil engineering, landscape architecture, and environmental services, leveraging our in-depth local experience and relationships to drive this transformative project forward. By focusing on advanced biomedical research and public health, the labs create a vibrant ecosystem for life sciences incubation, revitalizing outdated infrastructure and providing flexible, incubator-style wet labs that foster innovation and entrepreneurship. Organizations like Brown University benefit from ample growth opportunities that fuel economic prosperity and tackle critical health challenges, such as infectious diseases and the opioid overdose crisis.
Part of the I-195 redevelopment area, the site underwent extensive remediation to prepare for construction of this state-of-the-art facility. VHB conducted thorough site investigations to identify and facilitate the removal and safe disposal of more than 16,000 tons of contaminated soil. Our team certified more than 4,700 tons of imported clean fill that now forms part of the sub-slab depressurization system (SSDS), an engineered barrier that prevents volatile compounds from migrating into the building and complies with RIDEM requirements. Throughout construction, VHB has collaboratively managed the SI&R process with contractors to ensure environmental safety and compliance. With completion anticipated by late summer 2025, The PVD Labs are poised to become a regional landmark, drawing talent, fostering collaboration, and positioning Rhode Island at the forefront of health sciences research and innovation.
