Long Island Patient Care Pavilion Traffic Impacts

West Islip, NY

As part of an expansion plan to better meet the needs of the communities on the south shore of Long Island, a major hospital will construct a new, approximately 300,000-square-foot, six-story Patient Care Pavilion (PCP) that will replace and add new surgical and inpatient facilities and create space for future expansion. As part of the local permitting process, and to complete the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Highway Work Permit application, VHB conducted a traffic analysis to measure the potential project impacts.

Due to the extensive impacts on traffic volumes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, collecting data for typical traffic counts could not be performed. With Intersect, VHB was able to develop traffic volume data for six key intersections near the PCP’s campus using data collected the previous year. The Intersect data enabled VHB to finalize the traffic analysis that would be acceptable to the local permitting authorities and NYSDOT.

Additionally, the use of Intersect kept the project on the necessary schedule to secure critical FEMA funding.
