Dorchester Bay City is transforming three underutilized parcels on the Columbia Point peninsula into a vibrant, six-million-square-foot mixed-use waterfront district. This transit-oriented development will include more than 2,000 residential apartments, lab and office space, retail and restaurant operations, as well as parks and plazas that will enhance the public realm and strengthen connections to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s JFK/UMass Station and South Boston neighborhoods.
VHB provided civil engineering, transportation planning, and climate resiliency services and prepared the resiliency adaptation analysis to guide long-term flood protection and site design. Serving as lead engineer for a nature-based vegetated living levee, VHB is helping the team protect the site from sea level rise and storm surge while creating a more accessible and attractive waterfront edge. In addition, our team’s multimodal analysis identified transit service enhancements and roadway upgrades that support walking, biking, and transit use, helping the client deliver a complete street network that improves circulation, supports economic development, and expands access to jobs, housing, and open space.
