Lineage Cold Storage Facility

Portsmouth, VA

Lineage Logistics’ cold storage facility is the most advanced cold storage facility in the Eastern United States. With more than 26,000 rack locations and 50 refrigerator container plugs on site, the new facility is helping to meet the surge in demand for cold storage space and strengthening the Port of Virginia’s supply chain and logistics infrastructure. The 167,264-square-foot facility is fully automated and is being used to import, export, process and distribute a variety of food products across the region. This $84 million investment repositioned a portion of the former BASF Corporation site, brought 80 new jobs to the region, and supported the city’s economic expansion. VHB prepared an early earthwork, erosion and sediment control, demolition, and stormwater package to facilitate an accelerated construction schedule. Strong local relationships and deep knowledge of the site were instrumental in expediting the permitting and advancing the design of the infrastructure to support operations. The cold storage facility’s strategic location along the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, adjacent to the Virginia International Gateway terminal, gives Lineage Logistics access to global markets through an integrated network of highways, air, rail, and sea services.
