Staten Island Marine Development

Staten Island, NY

In 2013, Staten Island Marine Development (SIMD) began the redevelopment of the former GATX Oil Storage facility, reclaiming about 700 acres for commercial development. The master development plan called for the build-out of more than three million square feet of warehouse and fulfillment space to accommodate the demand for industrial space in the New York City area. VHB brought strong knowledge from previous work on the site and worked alongside SIMD to develop a site plan, focusing on transportation systems and infrastructure. The team studied the capacity of the internal and external roadway networks, feasibility of extending rail spurs, and evaluation of time and cost benefits (including tolls, drayage, etc.) of imported freight transportation. The eastern parcel was sold in 2016 and VHB has continued to help position the western parcel for acquisition by a development partner.
